Amaryllis Instructions

If you're here you must have received one of our amaryllis forcing kits or a pre-sprouting bulb! We are so excited for you to enjoy your blooms to come. Here are some tips below to help you get the most out of your plant.

Storage of gift kit

  • Keep in a dark, cool spot (such as a basement or closet) until ready to gift or ready to use.

Pre-Bloom

  • Once you are ready to start your bulbs, place in a warm & sunny location indoors. (Warmer the better!) The kits come packaged with decorative moss on top to protect the bulbs until sold; you may keep the moss or remove it. If you choose to keep it just move it around the sprouts and water underneath it.

  • Water around the outside of bulb as needed when the top of the soil seems dry, usually 2-3 times per week. Do not overwater as the bulbs are prone to rot! Just keep it lightly moist.

  • Once the sprouts start to appear, make sure it is near a sunny window & rotate the pot every now and then to ensure it gets equal sunlight.

Blooming Period

  • Your amaryllis should bloom in 4-6 weeks. Remove from direct sun now to help the blooms last longer. Continue watering as before.

  • You may need to stake or tie your stems together, as they can get quite tall and heavy.

  • Or if you wish, you may cut the stems and place in a vase with water! They have a very long vase life.

Post-Bloom (don't throw it away - save it for next year!)

  • Once your amaryllis has stopped blooming and the flowers start to fade, cut the flower stalk a few inches above the bulb - making sure to keep the leaves intact!

  • Place it back by the sunny location and continue watering. You can even move it outdoors come spring/summer.

  • About 2 months before you want it to start sprouting again, move it in a cool, dark spot and stop watering. Cut off all the foliage down to the bulb and leave it be until you're ready to add more soil and start from the beginning!
